Setting the Record Straight: Legal Hunting vs Illegal Hunting and Poaching

NZDA seeks to represent the thousands of law-abiding recreational hunters who are passionate about ethical hunting, wildlife conservation, and building strong relationships with landowners. However, media coverage over recent years has blurred the line between lawful hunters and those engaging in illegal hunting or poaching. This confusion tarnishes the reputation of responsible hunters and misrepresents the true victims—rural landowners and communities.

One major issue is the misuse of language in the media. Illegal poachers and trespassers are often referred to as ‘hunters,’ which is misleading and unfair. Calling a poacher a ‘hunter’ is like calling a thief a ‘shopper.’ This inaccurate portrayal damages the reputation of ethical hunters who follow the rules and respect the land. Equally troubling is how the real victims—farmers, forestry workers, and rural landowners—are sometimes painted as being at fault. Media narratives occasionally romanticise illegal hunters as modern-day Robin Hoods.

In reality, these are serious crimes involving trespassing, theft, illegal firearms use, and dangerous behaviour that jeopardise livelihoods and lives. Farmers should not have to fear for their safety or property. This issue extends beyond farmers. All licensed firearms owners are also victims, as these misrepresentations erode our mana and public trust. General support for legitimate firearms ownership and use is unfairly conflated with criminal activities, further harming the reputation of responsible hunters and firearms users. While the government is not currently addressing illegal hunting specifically, they are taking steps to crack down on gangs and plan to reform firearms laws next year. These actions are crucial, but the ongoing issue of poaching and illegal hunting also needs urgent attention to protect rural communities and uphold the rule of law.

At NZDA, we advocate for stronger enforcement, better education, and accurate representation. Lawful hunters are not the problem—we are part of the solution. Ethical hunting, conservation, and safe firearms practices are at the heart of what we do. Let’s work together to uphold the rule of law, protect rural communities, and ensure hunting remains a valued and respected tradition.
