NZDA Members Represent Hunting on Conservation Boards

NZDA is proud to announce that several of our members have been appointed to Conservation Boards across New Zealand, further solidifying the vital role hunters play as conservationists.

NZDA Members on Conservation Boards

Conservation Minister Hon. Tama Potaka recently confirmed the appointments of 64 individuals to Conservation Boards across the country. Among them are four NZDA members, each bringing a wealth of expertise and a strong voice for recreational hunting:

  • Tim Taylor, NZDA National Board Member (Tauranga) – Bay of Plenty Conservation Board
  • Sharon Salmons (Queenstown) – Southland Conservation Board
  • Mark Elliotte, NZDA National Board Member (Wanaka) – Otago Conservation Board
  • Bill O'Leary, NZDA National Life Member (Nelson) – Nelson-Marlborough Conservation Board

Their contributions represent a significant step in ensuring hunters are part of the decision-making processes that influence the management of our conservation land.

Conservation Boards act as independent bodies, providing critical oversight and advice on the management of conservation areas. They collaborate with the Department of Conservation (DOC) to ensure regional plans—such as conservation management strategies and national park management plans—reflect the interests of local communities, iwi, and stakeholders like recreational hunters.

Why Conservation Boards Matter

Conservation Boards are at the heart of community-based conservation efforts. They play an essential role in:

  • Reviewing and monitoring conservation management strategies and plans for their region.
  • Providing a voice for local concerns in DOC’s work and on a national level.
  • Ensuring the sustainable management of our natural and historic heritage, including recreation opportunities for hunters.

For NZDA members, this is a chance to influence policies that shape the future of hunting, recreation, and conservation in New Zealand.
