NZDA Members Bring New Life to Watchdog, Lawrence Bivouac, and McCoy Huts
The Ashburton and Rakaia Branches of the NZDA have once again demonstrated the dedication and resourcefulness of hunters as custodians of New Zealand’s backcountry. Over a busy weekend, a team of nine Ashburton NZDA members, joined by two skilled builders from the Rakaia Branch, completed essential renovations across three iconic huts: Watchdog Hut, Lawrence Bivouac, and McCoy Hut.
At Watchdog Hut:
- The team installed a new roof to safeguard the structure against the elements.
- They relocated and dug a new long drop, ensuring the comfort and practicality of the site for future visitors.
- Rotten windows were replaced with double-glazed aluminium, significantly improving insulation and durability.
- The interior and exterior of the hut, along with the toilet, were given a fresh coat of paint, breathing new life into the space.
At Lawrence Bivouac:
- Anchors and stainless steel rods were installed to enhance stability.
- The team replaced a weathered Perspex window with a new double-glazed aluminium one.
- Two final coats of paint were applied to ensure the bivouac is weatherproof and looking its best.
At McCoy Hut:
- A leaky fire flue was repaired to make the hut warm and safe for users.
- The floors were treated with linseed oil, preserving the timber and maintaining a rustic charm.
- The wood fires were revitalised with heat-resistant spray paint, extending their usability.
NZDA is grateful to the volunteers for tackling these projects, ensuring these huts remain in tact for years to come. Projects like these are only possible thanks to the effort of NZDA members and supporters.
