The only Department of Conservation organised and managed hunting competition in New Zealand, now in its 35th year was held at the end of April this year for animals taken in the Pureora Forest Park. Since its inception in 1988 the competition has provided DOC with a platform to inform the public and hunters on the flora and fauna present in the Pureora and DOC’s efforts to protect their uniqueness, as well as catering for recreational hunters through wild deer improvement and management. These events don’t run themselves and a large number of volunteers assisted with 11 NZDA Douglas Score measurers, Te Kuiti Pig Hunting Club members and of course a number of DOC staff. A BBQ lunch was provided by the DOC organisers which went down very well. The prize giving and display of heads was held on the 30th April at the Barryville Road DOC Pureora Field Base. There were various displays around biodiversity and deer aging. Around the walls were the winners from throughout the years that the competition has held. Along with deer and pigs, there was also a category for possums and a roaring competition. Competitors did not go home empty handed with many great prizes for placings and numerous spot prizes handed out on the day.
