These competitions are suitable for both centrefire and .22LR rimfire field hunting rifles where the rules apply equally to both centrefire and rimfire field, hunting or sporting rifles.

Purpose

The purpose of this competition is to provide a format for a target shooting competition for branch members who wish to shoot under conditions similar to a prone field situation, where a pack or similar is used as a rest, or who wish to compete in branch competition but are not able or do not wish to develop position rifle shooting skills.

There are three different competitions under this class:

  • Internal Branch Competition
  • Brown Trophy Short F
  • NZDA National Short F Nationals

Firearms and Equipment for the 3x Competitions

The firearms used are any centerfire that is 8mm or less in calibre and weighs no more than 7.75kg, while scope power is 'open'.

Shooting Style

The rifle is supported either on a detached or attached rest at the forend and a sand bag, a pack or similar is used as a rest, hand or arm at the butt stock.

Both of these competitions are NZDA National competitions and have prizes awarded at the NZDA conference.

Internal Branch Competition

The course of fire for this competition is three x five shot groups at 100m, with 2 convertible sighting shots on the first target of the day.

Differences - The Target

The difference is this competition uses the IBS 100yd Hunter Class target.

This target has six diagrams on it; five are scoring diagrams while the remaining diagram is used for sighting during the match. A match is 4 targets with 5 scoring shots on each target, one on each diagram.

Scoring is inward gauging with the centre dot on each diagram counted as 11, therefore the maximum score is 220 (4x5x11). Each competitor has 7 minutes to complete each target and is allowed an unlimited number of sighting shots during those 7 minutes.

Difference - The Target

The difference is this competition uses the IBS 100yd Hunter Score target.

Soring for this is inward gauging with a maximum score of 660, 11 points max per bull x 5 bulls x 6 targets x 2 distances. There is a 15 minute time limit for each match and the competitor may fire unlimited sighter shots on the sighter targets during the 15 minute time limit.
