Target Shooting Report: National Sporting Rifle Shoot 2025

National Sporting Rifle Shoot 2025 | 22nd - 23rd March

By Paul Carmine.

This year I decided to add a new section to the National Sporting Rifle Shoot (NSRS). I added the supported class which enabled new, Veteran or Disabled shooters to shoot the whole match using any position they decide and with a support. One veteran decided to shoot everything sitting off a tripod as this is the way he shoots when he hunts.

A junior shooter shot with an F class prone set up. Others shot prone off a bipod. All others shot as per the NSRS rules making them qualified to accept medals and national NZDA awards. All participants were entered into the prize draws, which featured guided fallow deer hunts, tools, hunting gear, and various other items, most of which had a value exceeding the $60 daily entry fee.

The shoot was held at the excellent North Auckland deerstalkers range which has become for now the home of the event. North Auckland provided great hospitality with free soft drinks and a BBQ of their famous venison sausages supplied by Kumeu Meat Processors.

The weather conditions were perfect. The format was RIMFIRE 50m prone, kneel stand 10 shots each 4min each and 5 shot standing snap 4sec per shot 100m: 10 shots each in prone, sit, stand in 4 min each 5 shot rapid prone in 20 sec CENTREFIRE 100m as per 50m rimfire but everything 5shots per position in 200m as per 100m rimfire but everything 5shots per position Centrefire was also shot in 4 mins per position except rapid 5 in 20sec and snap 4sec per shot to allow for cool barrels as hunting rifles can become too hot affecting grouping.

At each distance all positions are shot in one detail sequentially with min target changes Taking about 20 mins Competition was fierce; results are attached in the spreadsheet. Sporting Rifle shooting is intended for hunters to enhance their overall shooting skills. Clubs have the option to conduct a shortened version where all positions are shot at one distance.
