NZDA Rep Appointed to Minister’s Arms Advisory Group

NZDA Member, Mike Spray, Appointed to Minister’s Arms Advisory Group

NZDA is proud to share that long-standing member and former HUNTS National Manager Mike Spray has been appointed to the Minister’s Arms Advisory Group (MAAG) by the Minister of Justice, Hon Paul Goldsmith.

Mike’s appointment, confirmed in the New Zealand Gazette on 5 November 2025, is for a three year term from 6 November 2025 to 5 November 2028.

The MAAG exists under sections 88 and 90 of the Arms Act 1983, providing expert, community based advice to the Minister on firearms law, regulation, and policy.

This appointment comes at a critical time for New Zealand’s firearms system, with major reforms under way across clubs and ranges, the national firearms register, licence training, and education programmes.

Mike’s extensive background in hunter education and range safety - together with his leadership of NZDA’s HUNTS programme will ensure the voice of responsible, ethical hunters is represented in shaping these changes.

“This is an exciting and timely appointment,” said Gwyn Thurlow, NZDA CEO. “Mike’s deep knowledge of safe firearms use and his commitment to education will bring real-world experience to the policy table as New Zealand navigates much needed reform of its firearms system.”

NZDA congratulates Mike on this well-deserved appointment. His continued contribution as a volunteer and leader reflects the values of our Association and demonstrates the important role that hunters play in supporting practical, evidence-based regulation and community safety.
