New DOC Hunting Permit System for Rakiura/Stewart Island

New DOC Hunting Permit System for Rakiura/Stewart Island is Now Live

Hunters can now book any of the 35 restricted hunting blocks on Rakiura/Stewart Island through a new online portal.

DOC aims to simplify the permit application process for restricted blocks using online, self-service technology. Rakiura’s 35 restricted hunting blocks are the first to be included in a new system that will eventually cover all restricted and balloted hunting blocks in New Zealand.

The new system makes block bookings easier. Hunters can see available blocks in real time, book a restricted block, and apply for a permit online. It is accessed via the Rakiura hunting pages on the DOC website or directly at https://permits-licences.doc.govt.nz/.

Previously, hunters used a block booking calendar on the DOC website and applied through a web form. The new system replaces this, allowing anyone to check block availability in real time without needing an account. However, to book a block, hunters need to create an account and log in.

“We are designing for the future, and an online account will eventually be a great way for hunters to track their permits,” says Mark Beardsley from DOC. “Anyone can check block availability, but booking requires an account and login.”

Mark recommends setting up an account now if you plan to hunt whitetail deer on Rakiura, even if you don’t want to book immediately. “It’s free and saves time later. Popular blocks are snapped up quickly, so having an account ready helps you book as soon as a block is available” he says.

He also advises having your hunting party members’ details ready when booking. “You’ll need to add names and contact details for your hunting party members because each person needs their own permit. This way, we can contact them to confirm their participation and send their permits,” says Mark. “Party members will now receive notifications about the booking.”

Hunters can still apply for a permit by calling the Rakiura Visitor Centre or visiting in person. Existing bookings for late 2024 or 2025 have been transferred to the new system, and some hunters may have already received email or text confirmations.

With the pilot for restricted hunting permits on Rakiura underway, DOC will next focus on upgrading the open hunting permits system.
