DOC: Consultation Open on the Protection of Native Species on Stewart Island/Rakiura

Notice from DOC: Consultation Open on the Protection of Native Species on Stewart Island/Rakiura

Update from the Department of Conservation:

The Department of Conservation (DOC), in collaboration with ZIP (Zero Invasive Predators), is undertaking consultation on a proposed predator control operation on Rakiura (Stewart Island) aimed at protecting the critically endangered pukunui / southern New Zealand dotterel.

The proposed operation would cover approximately one-fifth of the island and may involve the aerial application of 1080. DOC and ZIP are engaging with a broad range of stakeholders, including mana whenua, local landowners, concessionaires, commercial operators, and recreational groups such as hunters.

NZDA supports the protection of endangered native species and encourages the use of targeted, science-based methods that minimise harm to valued non-target species, such as whitetail deer. We are aware of past instances where low sowing rates of 1080 have still resulted in significant whitetail mortality, which is of concern to the hunting community. NZDA is advocating for the use of deer repellent across all of the treatment area if this operation goes ahead but your views are also needed.

If you are an interested party, we strongly encourage you to participate in the consultation process and make a written submission. Whether you have concerns, suggestions, or wish to express support, your input will help inform the final decision on whether the operation proceeds.

Call for Submissions:

Submissions close on Friday 18 April 2025. The DOC fact sheet—containing full details and the submission address—is attached to the original communication. You can send submissions or request further information by emailing: pukunui@doc.govt.nz

NZDA will continue to engage with DOC and ZIP to ensure the interests of hunters are represented and that any potential impacts are mitigated.
