Update 9 December 2004

As a result the association's submission to the Kaimanawa Forest Park Review NZDA has received a letter of reply from the Tongaririo Taupo Conservancy advising that they have read our submission and can assure us that it will be taken into account during the preparation of the draft plan.

A further round of submissions will be invited once the draft if send out (around March 2005) and the association will have another opportunity to be involved in the review process at this stage.

NZDA will have the opportunity to present their submission to the hearing committee made up of Tongariro/Taupo Conservation Board members and departmental staff.

Hunters, who comprise the park's largest single user group, stalk red and Sika deer throughout the park. Along with neighbouring Kaweka Forest Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park has the only wild herd of Sika deer in the Southern Hemisphere. In recognition of the sport hunting potential of the Sika herd, the northern part of the park was gazetted as a recreational hunting area in 1982 and is now one of the highest used Recreational Hunting Areas (RHA) in the country.

Take particular note of the Kaimanawa Forest Park Management Plan discussion document and comment on the following:

  • Page 4 public access and your views on the track systems and permit systems for access
  • Page 5 the conflict of air access with wilderness values, ie - aerial access for hunters and anglers
  • Page 6 protecting indigenous flora and fauna suggesting intensive wild animal control efforts should be increased as part of measures to maintain or enhance ecosystem functions.
  • Page 7 recreational hunting and the review of removing the Kaimanawa Recreational Hunting Area (RHA) designation

Persons and organisations with an interest in the park are invited to submit their ideas and suggestions for the review in writing by 4.pm Friday 5th November 2005.
