Six North Canty members and one each from Nelson and Marlborough competed in the Centrefire Championships at the McLean’s Island Range. Cold blustery North Easterly conditions made the shooting interesting to say the least! At the end of the day James Steans (Marlborough) took out first place, Mike Peacock from Murchison (Nelson Branch) in second in the open class. Paul Kershaw was first in Sporting class with 85+ year-old Wally Carter in second.
Sunday 21st October saw seven shooters contest the Rimfire event in much more pleasant conditions.
The wind was nothing like as strong, but even light airs have a significant affect on the flight of a 22 Rimfire projectile, as everyone found to their dismay throughout the day. James Steans again took out first place in the open class with Mike Peacock second again. Wally was the only Sporting class shooter in this event.
The results of the aggregate over the two days are as follows:
Open Class - (10 shots x 3 positions x 2 ranges = 600 possible)
Sporting Class - (5 shots x 3 positions x 2 ranges = 300 possible)
To my mind the most significant effort was Mike Peacock’s 200 m centrefire scores on the Saturday;
Prone 94.1; Kneeling 93.0; Sitting 90.1!
A pity there were not more local entries in the Sporting class - but we’ll try again.
